3D printed nanofiltration composite membranes with reduced concentration polarisation

3D printed nanofiltration (NF) composite membranes with surface patterns minimising the impact of concentration polarisation (CP) are presented here for first time. The consist a NF polydopamine?coated polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF/PDA) selective layer on asymmetric wavy (patterned) support. result is membrane pure water permeance 14 ± 2 LMH bar ? 1 and molecular weight cut-off ?550 Da, measured using crossflow setup at transmembrane pressure Reynold number ( Re ) 700, range dyes (mass balance >97% all tests). CP behaviour was assessed by filtration Congo red (CR) dye solution (0.01 g L , showing that pattern significantly reduced compared to flat membranes, nearly tripling mass transfer coefficient 57% decline factor. Computational fluid dynamics showed these significant performance improvements were due improved hydrodynamics, maximum shear stress induced structure (1.35 Pa) an order magnitude higher than (0.18 = 700.
